Biodiversity Festivals bringing communities together to observe and document their own place

Programs of biodiversity discovery events can be designed for your environment and your community. Contact me to talk about possibilities.

The Living Reef Festival took place in Esperance in Western Australia in 2022. It brought together people from all walks of life to discover and document the plants and animals of the Great Southern Reef.

The 22 events culminated in a survey art exhibition of over 200 painted and drawn nature studies in which we collaboratively created a snapshot of the biota of this precious temperate reef. There was also the community performance of their percussion soundscape of Sounds of the Reef. This was created during a series of workshops with visiting percussionist and educator Thea Rossen. The Knowing Nullaki Biodiversity Festival took place in Denmark Western Australia in 2022. This festival was designed and delivered in partnership with Green Skills Denmark, The Butter Factory Arts Centre, DWER, local schools and community groups.

Bringing together people from all sections of the community we discovered and documented the living things of the Nullaki Wilson Inlet and surrounding catchment area through a series of 23 field, studio and workshop events.

The exhibition was a sparkling array of beautiful nature studies, photographs and collaborative biodiversity paintings created by the people of Denmark.

The local member the Honourable Jane Kelsbie’s reaction to the exhibition is captured in this short video.

The Geraldton Community Coastal Biodiversity Festival was a collaboration with the Northern Agricultural Catchments Council and the people of Geraldton. The program of 17 school and community events culminated in a stunning exhibition of over 350 artworks created by the people of Geraldton in Western Australia.

Together we spent a month documenting, cataloging and celebrating the plants and animals of the midwest coast. All art works were created during the different events by people from all walks of life who came together to share their knowledge and learn about their own place.
