Biodiversity Festivals bringing communities together to observe and document their own place

The Living Reef Festival took place in Esperance in Western Australia in 2022. It brought together people from all walks of life to discover and document the plants and animals of the Great Southern Reef.

The 22 studio, school and field events culminated in the survey art exhibition of over 200 painted and drawn nature studies of reef plants and associated animal communities. Together we created a snapshot of the biota of this precious temperate reef. The Sounds of the Reef percussion soundscape was created during a series of workshops with percussionist and educator Thea Rossen. Watch the video to see what we created together.

Leeming Community and Primary School Wetlands Project

Over 270 students and community members came together to create multi media documentation of the wetland system. Watch this three minute video to see all the exciting things the students andt heir teachers and families created.

The Knowing Nullaki Festival took place in Denmark Western Australia in 2022. The 23 workshops and field events included people from all sectors of the community. Together we discovered and documented the living things of the Nullaki Wilson Inlet and surrounding catchment area. The exhibition of artworks, made by the people of Denmark, was a sparkling array of beautiful nature studies, photographs and two large collaborative biodiversity paintings.

This festival was designed and delivered in partnership with Green Skills Denmark, The Butter Factory Arts Centre, DWER, local schools and community groups and made possible with funding from DLGSC and Lottery West

The Geraldton Community Coastal Biodiversity Festival was a collaboration with the Northern Agricultural Catchments Council and the people of Geraldton. The program of 17 school and community events culminated in a stunning exhibition of over 350 artworks created by the people of Geraldton in Western Australia.

Together we spent a month documenting, cataloging and celebrating the plants and animals of the midwest coast. All art works were created during the different events by people from all walks of life who came together to share their knowledge and learn about their own place.
